Random Reds Ruminations: Reds 7 Brewers 3, May 30

After an absolutely brutal road trip that saw the Reds go 2-8 (0-5 in games decided by one run), the boys returned home and got the homestand off to a good start with a 7-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

- Jay Bruce is the hottest hitter on the planet right now, and if he does not win Player of the Month for May I am not sure what that award means. Bruce's hot streak continued yesterday in a game that saw him come up just a double shy of the cycle. Brrruuuuucccce went 3-4, including a three-run blast to right field in the four-run fourth inning.

- Travis Wood was good, not great, but good. Wood went 6 innings and only allowed three runs, which all came in the 5th inning. The biggest problem with that three-run inning is that he seemed to relax after the Reds got him 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th. With a 5-0 lead and facing the 8 and 9 spots in the Milwaukee lineup, Wood surrendered back to back solo HRs to Carlos Gomez and Josh Wilson, not exactly Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. The Reds needed a shut-down inning there after putting up a big number, and Wood did not deliver. Wood did come back in the sixth with a quick inning, so not all was lost. Wood's line: 6 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 0 BB.

- Brandon Phillips's bat may have cooled off a bit, but we can always count on his glove. He did it again in the 4th inning. Ryan Braun led off the inning, and smoked a hard grounder up the middle. Phillips dove to his right, picked the ball, and in one motion got to his knee, threw across his body, and got Braun by half a step. They might as well etch his name on the Gold Glove right now.

- The win moves the Reds within 4 games of the NL Central leading Cardinals, who lost 7-3 to the Giants on Monday.

The Reds (28-27) look to take the series from the Brewers (29-25) today. Chad Reineke (0-0, -.-- ERA) makes his major league debut for Cincinnati. He will face off against former Cy Young Award winner Zach Greinke (3-1, 5.79 ERA).
