Who were those guys in the Cincinnati uniforms, and what have they done with the real Reds? The worst part about West Coast road trips is games like last night. I stay up until 11:30 to have the privilege of watching my team get absolutely destroyed. Very little went right for the Reds, and they now find themselves needing to win both Saturday and Sunday in the desert to take the series from the Diamondbacks.
- The Reds offense simply could not solve the riddle that was Ian Kennedy last night. Kennedy dominated the potent Reds lineup, and he did it with off-speed pitches. Kennedy threw 8 innings, scattering 6 hits and striking out 8. It seemed to this observer that almost all of those Ks came on changeups, with Reds hitters getting way out on their front foot and off-balance.
- The offensive star for Arizona was Miguel Montero, which is good for my fantasy team but bad for my favorite team. The Diamondbacks catcher was 3-3 with a walk, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.
-Travis Wood did his best Edinson Volquez impersonation, giving up 2 runs in the first inning, and another in the second. He went out for the sixth inning, but did not retire a batter, surrendering 3 more runs in that frame. Perhaps we have been spoiled by Wood and he is bound to have a bad outing every now and again, it was just bad timing that it cmae on a night where the offense could not get anything going.
-As ugly as Wood's line looks, Matt Maloney's looks even worse. These numbers speak for themselves, and not in a good way: 1 2/3 IP, 6 Hs, 7 ERs, 1 BB, 2 Ks, 3 HRs.
- Even on a night where the opposing pitcher was dominant, Joey Votto showed why he is one of the top hitters in the league. Votto found a way to make good contact and was 2-4 with a double and a booming HR to deep center field.
The Reds (5-2) look to snap the first losing streak of the season at 2 games today in game 2 against Arizona (3-3). They send Bronson Arroyo (1-0) to the hill to face off against Daniel Hudson (0-1). Hopefully the Reds offense gets over the jet lag, and hopefully Daniel Hudson doesn't get any pointers from Ian Kennedy.
